A Step-by-Step Guide for Smooth, Hair-Free Skin

If you're considering electrolysis to say goodbye to unwanted hair for good, you're on the right path! Electrolysis is the only FDA-approved method of permanent hair removal, and it works on all skin tones and hair types. But like any beauty treatment, how you prepare for electrolysis can make a big difference in your experience and results.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through exactly what to do—and what to avoid—so you can feel confident walking into your appointment. Whether it’s your first session or your tenth, this is the go-to resource you’ll want to bookmark and refer back to.

Why Preparation Matters for Electrolysis

Electrolysis works by targeting each individual hair follicle with a tiny electrical current to permanently stop hair growth. But your skin’s condition—and even what you’ve eaten or applied that day—can impact the treatment.

Proper preparation can:

  • Minimize discomfort

  • Speed up healing

  • Prevent irritation or breakouts

  • Help your provider treat more hairs efficiently in each session

Think of it like prepping for a workout: the better you prepare, the better the results.

The Week Before: Build Your Pre-Care Routine

Stop Waxing and Tweezing

To treat the hair follicle, the follicle has to be intact. That means no waxing, tweezing, threading, or epilating for 2–3 weeks before your appointment. Shaving is okay (and in some cases recommended), since it doesn't disturb the root.

Hydrate Your Skin (and Your Body!)

Hydrated skin is happy skin. Drink plenty of water and moisturize daily using gentle, fragrance-free products. This helps your skin stay resilient during treatment.

Avoid Sun Exposure and Tanning Beds

Sunburned or recently tanned skin is more prone to scabbing, hyperpigmentation, or irritation during and after electrolysis. Avoid excessive sun exposure and skip the tanning salon for at least 5 days before treatment. Always wear SPF!

48 Hours Before: Prep Like a Pro

Pause Harsh Skin Products

Discontinue the following at least 48–72 hours before treatment:

  • Retin-A or tretinoin

  • AHA/BHA acids

  • Benzoyl peroxide

  • Exfoliating scrubs or peels

These can thin your skin or make it extra sensitive to the electric current used in electrolysis.

If you’re using prescription medication like Accutane (isotretinoin), please consult with your dermatologist or provider about how long you should be off the medication before starting electrolysis.

Light Exfoliation is OK

You can gently exfoliate the area 24–48 hours before to remove dead skin cells. This helps the probe reach the follicle more efficiently. Use a soft washcloth, enzyme mask or a non-abrasive toner.

24 Hours Before: Final Touches

Avoid Caffeine and Alcohol

We know—your morning latte or evening wine might feel non-negotiable. But trust us on this one.

Both alcohol and caffeine can increase skin sensitivity, swelling, and discomfort. Avoid them for at least 24 hours before your session.

Wear Loose, Comfortable Clothing

Especially if we’re treating body areas like underarms, bikini, or legs. Tight clothes can rub against the skin and cause post-treatment irritation.

Day of Your Electrolysis Appointment

Come Fresh-Faced (or Fresh-Skinned)

When possible, arrive with clean, dry skin. Don’t apply makeup, lotion, deodorant, oils, or sunscreen to the treatment area. This ensures proper contact and prevents skin reactions.

If your appointment is after work, don't stress, we will make sure to clean your skin prior to starting treatment.

Consider Taking a Mild Pain Reliever

If you’re concerned about discomfort, taking ibuprofen 30–45 minutes beforehand can help. Always consult your doctor first before taking any medication.

What to Bring (or Not!)

  • Bring a list of any current skincare products or medications.

  • Don’t wear jewelry or tight accessories near the treatment area.

  • Bring headphones or a podcast if that helps you relax.

Common Questions About Electrolysis Preparation

Can I work out before my appointment?

It’s best to skip intense workouts 2–3 hours before electrolysis. Sweat can make your skin more reactive and increase the risk of irritation. However, if you plan on hitting the gym, we recommend working out before your treatment, as you will need to avoid sweating for the next 24-48 hours post treatment.

What if I’m on my period?

You can absolutely still have treatment, but you may be more sensitive to pain. If treating the bikini area, plan around your cycle if possible.

What products are safe to use before my appointment?

Stick with:

  • Gentle cleansers (no actives)

  • Hydrating, fragrance-free moisturizers

  • Aloe-based serums
